Trail Safety & Etiquette
Please practice common courtesy so everyone can enjoy Divide Road Ski Trails.
Trail Safety:
• Be aware that trail conditions can change. You may encounter new obstacles, bumps, branches, holes, wires – Please be alert!
• Be prepared for rapid changes in weather or unexpected circumstances. Trail assurance markers (blue triangles on trees along the trails) are meant to help guide you on the trails.
• Keep your group together; don’t let someone lag behind and get lost.
• Ultimately you are responsible for your own safety. Trails are not patrolled. Use at your own risk.
Trail Etiquette:
-
Snowshoers should avoid the set classic tracks and stay to the far side of skate lane next to edge of trail. Single-file is recommended, so as not to clog up the middle of the trail and block skiers from passing by.
-
Hiking/walking on the groomed ski trails severely degrades the groomed ski trails and makes travel difficult for skiers. Please limit hike on the groomed ski trails.
-
Right of Way – Whether it’s skaters and snowshoers or nordic skiers going up hill vs. down hill, the rule of thumb, is whoever can yield the easiest should do so. In other words, slower skiers (or snowshoers) should give way to faster skiers and those going uphill should yield to skiers coming downhill. Please pass on the left when ever possible. When stopped please move to the edge of the trail and avoid obstructing traffic.
-
Grooming In Progress – If you encounter the groomer on the trails, it’s recommended that you step aside well off the trail, or if the groomer stops, you should go around. This is particularly true with dogs and it’s helpful if you hold onto your dog by the collar. We try to groom at times that minimizes skier/groomer interaction, but sometimes it can’t be avoided. We want to make sure everyone is safe on the trails, including our four-legged friends.
-
Fatbikes/Snowbikes – UNA primarily maintains and grooms the trail system for Nordic skiing and snowshoe use. Fatbikes are not recommended. Local snowmobile clubs groom Divide Road and other snowmobile trails in the area. This map shows nearby groomed snowmobile trails.
Dogs:
-
We welcome dogs! Be mindful of your dog’s behavior when other users are on the trails or in the parking area. Dogs can cause accidents.
-
Dog owners are responsible for their pets while recreating on the Divide Road Ski trials. Please keep your dog in sight of you and under voice control at all times. It is important that you hold your dogs while the groomers are passing.
-
Help us be good community stewards of these trails. Please remove any dog waste you see from the trails, the trailhead and parking areas.
